  • Japan’s core inflation printed at 2.10%, the first reading above the Bank of Japan’s 2% goal since December [1].
  • The US 10-year Treasury yield was 4.96% on 22 October, down from 5.13% a day earlier [2].
  • Vantage USDJPY CFD traded at 157.07 as of 15:48 (GMT+8) on 23 October 2026, after a session low near 156.1.

USD/JPY traded at 157.07 as of 15:48 (GMT+8) on 23 October 2026. Most of the slide from near 158.20 came before Japan’s 2.10% core inflation print, alongside a 22 October risk-off bid for Treasuries and the yen, with the BOJ and Fed meeting next week.

Two Legs Behind the Slide to 156

USDJPY Chart

USD/JPY traded at 157.07 on the Vantage USDJPY CFD as of 15:48 (GMT+8) on 23 October 2026, down from near 158.20 on 22 October. Here’s the twist: about two-thirds of that slide was already on the chart before Japan’s core inflation printed at 2.10%, the first reading above the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) 2% goal since December [1].

The headline arrived after most of the move had clocked in. This USD JPY analysis today sorts out who did the work, what Japan’s number changed, and what it means for the risk picture into next week’s Fed and BOJ meetings.

Most USDJPY news today opens with Japan’s inflation print, and USD/JPY news today follows suit. The USD JPY chart tells it in a different order: the pair slid from near 158.20 early on 22 October to about 156.75 by 06:00 (GMT+8) on 23 October, roughly 145 pips or 0.92%, before the 07:30 (GMT+8) release [1].

Call it a two-leg journey. Leg two ran from the release to a low near 156.1 in the 08:00 (GMT+8) hourly candle, about 65 pips, before a bounce to 157.07. Pip figures are approximate chart readings (Figure 1).

So what carried leg one?

Risk-Off Hit Before Japan Spoke

The move began as a risk story, not a Japan story. FXStreet described 22 October as a risk-off session in which worries about AI-linked spending pressured stocks and sent money toward the yen, with USD/JPY down nearly 0.65% near 157 by 15:55 (GMT), its lowest since 30 September [3]. Treasuries caught the same bid: the 10-year yield closed at 4.96%, down 17 basis points from 5.13% and the biggest one-day fall between 14 and 22 October [2].

The Treasury figure is an end-of-day reading, so it can’t show whether yields or the yen moved first, and the sources describe the two as part of one risk-off day. Any USD JPY news today that skips that backdrop skips the plot.

About two-thirds of the slide was on the chart before Japan published a single number.

Japan’s number still mattered, just not the way the headline suggests.

Japan’s Inflation Keeps December in Play

Core inflation, which excludes fresh food, printed at 2.10%, in line with expectations. Governor Kazuo Ueda told parliament that underlying inflation is very close to the 2% goal [1].

Analysts aren’t redrawing calendars in a hurry. Standard Chartered, quoted by FXStreet, said “January 2027 remains our base case for the next hike” [4]. Daiwa Securities’ Kenji Yamamoto leans earlier: in a late-September note, he argued the hike to 1.25% marked a turning point in how the BOJ runs policy, with December next [5]. Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH) wrote on 19 October that the BOJ is “unlikely to crank up the pace of tightening” [6]. Three firms, three moods.

Surveys sit closer to Daiwa: 83% of economists in a Bloomberg survey, cited by FXStreet, expect a December hike [7]. That timing matters for the yen carry trade, where traders borrow yen to hold higher-yielding assets (Vantage’s earlier look at the unwind has background).

With the drivers laid out, the chart shows where the two legs left USD/JPY.

Levels Traders Are Watching

On the one-hour USDJPY chart, the USD JPY trend turned lower on 22 October after most of October inside a 157 to 159 range [1]: price now sits below both moving averages, near 158.00 and 157.46. Moving averages, as ever, report yesterday’s news; at least they report it accurately. The 14-period Relative Strength Index (RSI) read near 20 on 22 October and 49.87 at 15:48 (GMT+8) on 23 October (TradingView setup used for this analysis): momentum rebuilt faster than price.

USD/JPY Quick Answers

What Is USD to JPY Today?

USD to JPY was 157.07 on the Vantage USDJPY CFD as of 15:48 (GMT+8) on 23 October 2026. Written as USD / JPY, USD/JPY, or USDJPY, the pair quotes yen per dollar (Academy guide). USD JPY live quotes move every second the market is open, so this is a snapshot.

Is There a USD JPY Forecast Today?

This piece carries no USDJPY forecast, and Vantage publishes no USD JPY forecast today. It shows what the chart and the data did, and which dates sit ahead.

Those dates sit in next week’s calendar.

What to Watch Before 30 October

The Fed and the BOJ both decide within four days, and the calendar reads like a group chat nobody muted.

  • Fed Decision, 29 October: The Federal Open Market Committee meets on 27 and 28 October with no new projections, and the decision is due around 02:00 (GMT+8) on 29 October [8]. The federal funds range is 3.75% to 4.00% after a unanimous 12-0 vote on 16 September [9], and CME FedWatch put the odds of a hold at 92.8%, FXStreet reported [4].
  • BOJ Decision and Outlook Report, 30 October: The BOJ meets on 29 and 30 October and publishes its Outlook Report on 30 October [10]. Traders track such interest rate decisions closely.

The risk-off read weakens if the pair falls on a day stocks and US yields both rise; the Japan-led read weakens if it falls on a day Japanese data surprise on the soft side.

Gap Risk Into a Heavy Calendar

The opening puzzle had a plain answer: most of the slide came before Japan’s number, on a risk-off day that also pulled US yields lower. An in-line 2.10% print left the December conversation in place rather than starting it.

A Stop Loss is a lane marker, not a guard rail: it can help limit a loss to a planned size, but a gap can fill it at a worse price, and a weekend sits between this chart and next week’s decisions.

Leverage magnifies gains and losses alike, and the ratio available varies by product, account type, and jurisdiction, so USD JPY trading on margin can move an account balance by more than the pair itself moves. Position sizing is the variable a trader controls most directly; the leverage definition explains the mechanics.
