Why Silver Fell as Oil Lifted Fed Hike Bets – XAGUSD Analysis
Key Takeaways
- The silver price was 57.151 on the Vantage XAGUSD feed at 09:50 (GMT+8) on 22 October 2026, below both its 50-period and 200-period moving averages on the hourly chart.
- Brent crude rose back above $110 a barrel after a drone strike near Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah oilfield killed two people.4
- Markets priced an 83.9% chance of a Fed hold next week and about a 90% chance of a December hike, per CME FedWatch data reported by FXStreet.3
The Short Answer: Silver Price Today
Silver slipped to 57.151 on the Vantage XAGUSD feed at 09:50 (GMT+8) on 22 October 2026 as Brent topped $110 and markets priced a December Fed hike near 90%. By afternoon, silver was down about 2.6 times as much as gold, despite a softer dollar.
The silver price slipped to 57.151 on the Vantage XAGUSD feed at 09:50 (GMT+8) on 22 October 2026, just as Brent crude climbed back above $110 a barrel.4 In the textbook, an oil-driven inflation scare tends to suit precious metals, the classic inflation hedges. Silver appears to have skipped that chapter, and that puzzle is what we kept coming back to.
This piece unpacks why higher oil is reaching silver through the Federal Reserve’s rate path rather than haven demand, and what that changes for XAG/USD exposure into the 28 October Fed decision.
So, what is silver trading at today? At our cut-off, 57.151, down 0.25% on the hour and 53.0% below its January 2026 record of 121.64.1
The awkward part is timing. XAG/USD has spent five sessions in a tight band, and the 28 October Fed decision and US PCE data due after it both land next week.1 Our silver news today page tracks each headline.
Silver’s Range Held, but Momentum Faded

Price held its range. Momentum did not. On the hourly chart, the XAGUSD price has traded between roughly 56.40 and 58.00 since 16 October, a band only about 2.8% wide, apart from a brief spike on 20 October.
That band is the hangover from 14 October. On the chart, silver slid from near 59.30 early on 14 October to a low near 55.40 late that day, after US core consumer prices rose 0.3% in September, above the 0.2% forecast.2 Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank, said that day that metals were “under pressure” as the data lifted bets on another Fed hike.2
The 14-period Relative Strength Index (RSI) on the TradingView setup used for this analysis sank to around 10 during that slide, a reading the word oversold barely covers.
The rebound stalled somewhere telling. On 20 October, a spike to near 58.60 met the declining 200-period moving average and faded. At the cut-off, price sat below the 50-period average near 57.45 and the 200-period average near 58.23.
The RSI then read 42.67, below its signal line at 50.94, after touching about 60 late on 21 October. Price is still inside the box; momentum has slipped into the lower half of its own range.
The chart tells us where silver stalled. It does not tell us why an inflation scare pushed it lower, so we went looking.
Oil Is Reaching Silver Through the Fed
The trigger came from the Gulf. A drone intercepted near Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah oilfield killed two people, though operations were unaffected.4 Washington also ordered non-emergency staff and families to leave Saudi Arabia.5
Oil moved first. Brent futures rose $1.29 to $110.11 a barrel by 00:34 GMT (08:34 GMT+8), Reuters reported.6 ING analysts said oil prices “remain well bid” with Brent back above $110.6 Our oil price news today coverage follows the crude story.
From there, the road to silver runs through interest rates. CME FedWatch priced an 83.9% chance of a Fed hold next week and about 90% for a December hike, according to FXStreet.3 Yardeni Research noted two-year yields sat roughly 90 basis points above the federal funds rate, consistent with expectations of further tightening.9
Kaynat Chainwala, commodity researcher at Kotak Neo, argued that persistent oil strength could lift inflation expectations, Treasury yields, and the dollar, in an analysis published by Business Standard and cited by Invezz.10 More on policy sits on our Federal Reserve news page.
We also checked the usual suspect, the dollar. Later on Thursday, Trading Economics silver price data showed the US Dollar Index 0.26% lower while silver was down 3.02%.1 A softer dollar normally cushions metals, so the greenback is not the culprit.
Rates explain the direction. They do not explain the size, because gold faced the very same Fed and fell far less.
Why Silver Fell Harder Than Gold
In the same snapshot, gold was down 1.18% while silver fell 3.02%, a drop about 2.6 times larger.1 The two metals share a newsfeed and the first two letters of a ticker; on Thursday they did not share a reaction. Our gold price news page and XAUUSD page cover the other half.
The gold-to-silver ratio shows how far the gap has stretched. Dividing gold at 4,092.30 by silver at 56.205 in that snapshot gives a ratio near 72.8.1 On 23 September, one ounce of gold bought 66.2 ounces of silver.7 In plain terms, silver has lost roughly 9% of its value against gold in a month.
The likeliest reason is silver’s second job. More than half of silver demand is industrial: the World Silver Survey 2026 forecasts 639.6 million ounces of industrial use out of 1,112.6 million in total, roughly 57%.12 Kitco’s 21 October morning report noted silver shares gold’s rate headwinds, with industrial exposure adding sensitivity to weaker activity.11
Think of silver as working two jobs, store of value and factory input. Higher borrowing costs appear to squeeze both pay packets at once.
One limit is worth naming. The Silver Institute and Metals Focus still forecast a sixth straight deficit in 2026, of 46.3 million ounces.8 That annual balance has not stopped silver trading more than 50% below its record, so in the short run the rate path appears to outweigh the supply gap. Our commodities news section follows the supply story.
On 22 October, oil rose, the dollar index slipped, and silver still fell about 2.6 times as far as gold.
What Moved the Silver Price Today

|---|---|---|
| Brent Crude | Above $110 a barrel 4 | Higher inflation concerns |
| Fed Pricing (CME FedWatch) | 83.9% hold next week; about 90% December hike 3 | Higher expected rates weigh on a non-yielding metal |

| Gold | Down 1.18%, against silver’s 3.02% fall 1 | Fell about 2.6 times less than silver |
| Gold-to-Silver Ratio | Near 72.8, from 66.2 on 23 September 1,7 | Silver lagging gold |

That leaves two practical questions: which levels has the chart already marked, and which dates could change the read?

What to Watch
- US PCE Inflation, Next Week: The Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, and the next test of December hike pricing.1
- Fed Decision, 28 October 2026: Markets priced a hold.3 The statement lands around 02:00 (GMT+8) on 29 October, an hour when most of Asia is asleep and open positions are not.
- ECB and BoJ Decisions, Next Week: Both central banks were expected to hold rates, per Trading Economics.1
- Saudi Energy Infrastructure, Ongoing: Attacks near production sites coincided with oil’s gains this week.4
- Gold-to-Silver Ratio, Daily: A ratio that keeps widening would show silver still lagging gold on rate news.
Our read: rate expectations, not haven demand, are setting silver’s direction. It weakens if a softer PCE print pulls December hike odds lower, or if the RSI recovers above its signal line with price back above 58.23. It holds while the ratio keeps widening.
Silver Price FAQ
What Is Silver Trading at Today?
The XAGUSD price was 57.151 on the Vantage feed at 09:50 (GMT+8) on 22 October 2026; the Trading Economics silver price later showed about 56.21.1 The silver spot price varies by provider, so the time stamp matters as much as the number.
Why Are Silver Prices Today Down 12.8% on the Month?
The price of silver today is 12.78% lower than a month ago, per Trading Economics.1 Hot US inflation data, Brent above $110, and about 90% odds of a December hike have weighed on a metal that pays no yield.2,3,4
Silver Price Forecast: XAG/USD and What Is Priced In
This analysis does not offer a silver price XAGUSD forecast, and the chart has never volunteered one. Any silver price forecast for XAG USD hinges on PCE data, the 28 October Fed decision, and December hike pricing near 90%.3 The silver price now sits inside its 56.40 to 58.00 range.
Silver’s Risk Picture Into the Fed
So, back to the puzzle. Thursday’s inflation scare was supposed to suit silver. It did not, because the scare travelled through the Fed’s December meeting first. Until PCE and the 28 October decision reprice that path, the five-session range is the chart’s only settled fact.
Silver’s swings have been large relative to that range. On 14 October, the hourly chart shows the XAGUSD price falling about 6.6% from high to low, more than twice the current band’s width. A Stop Loss can limit losses to a planned size, but it does not guarantee that price; orders can fill at a worse level when prices gap around data releases, central bank decisions, or the weekly open.
Trading silver with leverage magnifies losses as well as potential returns. In proportional terms, at a leverage ratio of 1:20, a 3.02% move in silver, the size of Thursday’s fall in the Trading Economics data, equals about 60% of the margin committed to that position.1 Position size set as a share of account equity, rather than by available margin, determines how much of an account balance a single release can move.
