Why Gold Climbed as Yields Fell Despite Hot Inflation – XAUUSD Analysis
Key Takeaways
- Gold traded at $4,155.79 as of 10:04 (GMT+8) on 16 October 2026, just above its four-hour 50-period moving average at $4,151.25.
- Spot gold was up 1.3% by 13:30 GMT on 15 October as the dollar slipped 0.5% and the US 10-year Treasury yield fell to a three-week low.
- Global gold-backed ETFs ended September holding a record 4,256 tonnes, while COMEX managed-money net longs fell by 84 tonnes over the month.
The gold price today stood at $4,155.79 as of 10:04 (GMT+8) on 16 October 2026, and on paper it had no business looking this comfortable. US consumer prices rose 3.7% in the year to September, above forecasts. 1 Producer prices followed with their biggest jump in four and a half years. 2 The gold price still finished Thursday 1.6% higher, its largest daily gain in more than two weeks. 3
So we went looking for the reason. The trail runs through bond yields, a quiet split between two kinds of gold buyer, and the XAUUSD chart, before Fed Chair Kevin Warsh speaks in Bangkok at 11:30 (GMT+8). 4 It is the last scheduled Fed commentary before the blackout on 17 October, 5 which gives this read a shelf life of about 90 minutes.
As of 10:04 (GMT+8) on 16 October 2026, Vantage XAUUSD CFD traded at $4,155.79, 0.06% above the previous four-hour close; the record high for gold is $5,608.35, set in January 2026. 6
Why Did Gold Rise This Week
Gold rose 1.6% on 15 October as US Treasury yields and the dollar fell, cutting the cost of holding a metal that pays no interest. Softer remarks from two Fed officials then trimmed October rate-hike odds to about 30%, outweighing September’s hotter 3.7% inflation print.
What Moved the Gold Price This Week
| Driver | Latest Reading | How Gold Responded |
|---|---|---|
| US CPI (September) | 3.7% year on year, above the 3.6% forecast | Hike bets jumped and gold slid to a one-week low on 14 October |
| US PPI (September) | Biggest monthly rise in 4.5 years | Little extra damage; Zaner Metals said the market expected it |
| US 10-year Treasury yield | Three-week low on 15 October | Lower opportunity cost of holding gold |
| US Dollar Index | 102.04 early on 16 October (GMT) | A softer dollar coincided with Thursday’s rebound |
| FedWatch October hike odds | About 30% on 15 October, from 41.5% after CPI | Rate pressure eased into the Warsh remarks |
| Gold ETF holdings | Record 4,256 tonnes at end-September | Physical demand held up through the September slide |

The table covers the what. The why is more interesting.
Bond Yields, Not Inflation, Set the Tone

Thursday’s rebound lined up with the bond market, not the inflation data. Yields fell by as much as 12 to 15 basis points across the curve, 3 and the December gold price future rose 1.7% to $4,177.80. 2
Gold pays no interest, so falling yields lower the cost of holding it, and that appears to have outweighed the inflation surprise. Gold, it seems, read the bond market before it read the inflation report.
Not everyone found the CPI data easy to dismiss. Stephen Brown, chief North America economist at Capital Economics, called the core surprise “broad-based rather than due to any obvious temporary factors”. 1 Peter Grant, senior metals strategist at Zaner Metals, saw the other side, arguing the Fed is “hamstrung to some degree because of the fiscal situation”. 2
Rate pricing settled the argument for now. October hike odds nearly doubled after CPI, from about 22% to 41.5%, 7 then eased to about 30% once San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly and Vice Chair Michelle Bowman signalled no immediate need to move. 2
That explains Thursday. It does not explain why gold sits roughly a fifth below where it stood when the Middle East conflict began.
Why the Conflict Has Not Lifted Gold
Gold has lost around a fifth of its value since the Middle East conflict began in late February, as borrowing costs outweighed demand for safe-haven assets. 3 The route ran through oil: higher crude fed US inflation, which fed rate-hike expectations, which lifted yields and the dollar.
The Fed acted on that chain in September, raising rates by 25 basis points to a 3.75% to 4.00% range, its first hike in three years. 7 On 28 September, gold fell more than 3% to its lowest level in over seven weeks as oil climbed and FedWatch priced a 70.3% chance of an October hike. 8 UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo named higher oil and rising hike expectations as “the main drivers behind gold’s recent weakness”. 8
Labour data and fiscal concerns also feed rate pricing; this section follows oil because the wires tied it to the September slide.
If rates did the selling, the next question is who was doing the buying.
ETF Buyers Held On as Futures Funds Sold
When we lined up the World Gold Council’s September data against futures positioning, two groups were moving in opposite directions. 9 Gold-backed ETFs attracted US$10bn, capping a record US$31bn quarter, and holdings rose 67 tonnes to a record 4,256 tonnes even as the price fell.
Over the same month, managed-money net longs on COMEX fell by 84 tonnes to 387 tonnes. 9 Funds that hold bars in vaults kept adding, while funds that hold futures contracts cut their bets. The September selling appears to have come from renters of gold exposure rather than owners of the metal.
Asian-listed funds added US$2.3bn, led by China, with inflows in India, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore too. 9 The gold trading guide explains how spot, futures, and ETF exposure differ.
Gold-backed ETFs ended September with a record 4,256 tonnes while futures funds cut net longs by 84 tonnes: the selling appears to have come through contracts, not vaults.
That split matters on a four-hour chart: ETF demand builds over weeks, while futures positioning can swing within a session. Those flows sit underneath the price. The XAUUSD chart shows what sits on top.
XAUUSD Chart: Lower Highs, Steadier Lows

The four-hour XAUUSD chart has looked bearish since late September, and that structure is still in place. Price held below the falling 200-period moving average, at $4,268.63 at the cut-off, and swing highs stepped down from near $4,400 on 21 September to near $4,178 on 15 October.
The lows tell a different story: near $4,065 on 7 October, then near $4,075 on 14 October. From the September high to that low, the XAUUSD price fell about 7.4%.
At the cut-off, price sat just above the flattening 50-period moving average at $4,151.25. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) on the TradingView setup used for this analysis read 51.39, above its own average of 45.79. A reading of 51.39 is about as non-committal as the indicator gets.

What to Watch Before the 28 October Fed Decision
For XAUUSD news today and beyond, these dates matter. Times are GMT+8, which puts the Fed decision at 02:00 in Kuala Lumpur, well after most Asia desks have gone home.
- Warsh at the IMF, 16 October 2026, 11:30 (GMT+8): A 30-minute talk with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. 4
- FOMC Decision, 29 October 2026, 02:00 (GMT+8): Hike odds sat near 30% on 15 October; 2 Forbes reported December as the base case. 10 See Federal Reserve news.
- US Q3 GDP and September PCE, 29 October 2026, 20:30 (GMT+8): The Fed’s preferred inflation gauge lands the day after the decision.
- Bank of Japan Decision, 30 October 2026: A second central bank call inside 48 hours.
- Oil Prices, Ongoing: Crude was the first link in September’s rate-pricing chain.
What would change the read: the view that rate pricing, not haven demand, is setting the gold price weakens if gold rises on a day when yields also climb, or if October’s ETF data shows holdings falling.
Gold Price Today: Quick Answers
What Is the Gold Rate Today?
Gold traded at $4,155.79 as of 10:04 (GMT+8) on 16 October 2026. If you are checking today gold rate quotes in MYR or INR per gram, they follow that dollar price adjusted for the exchange rate, so gold rate expectations can shift even on a flat day. More on the gold price news page.
Is Gold Bearish Right Now?
The four-hour chart shows lower highs below a falling 200-period MA, a pattern usually called bearish, but the lows stopped falling after 7 October. That describes the chart at the cut-off, not the next move.
Does This Analysis Include a Gold Price Prediction?
No. A gold price prediction or an XAUUSD prediction is a call on direction, and this piece does not make one. The nearest market-based read on gold price expectations is rate pricing, which put October hike odds at about 30% on 15 October. 2 Anyone after a gold market prediction, a prediction on gold rate moves, or a prediction about gold rate levels will find the inputs here, not a verdict.
Two-Way Rate Risk Into the Fed Decision
This week opened with hot inflation and a firmer gold price, and the evidence points to an explanation. Gold followed yields and the dollar lower in September and followed them back on Thursday, while ETF holders kept buying underneath. Whether that balance holds now runs through Warsh’s remarks today and the Fed’s decision on 28 October.
Gold moved more than 3% in one session on 28 September and 1.6% on 15 October. A Stop Loss does not prevent losses; it limits them to a planned size, and in fast markets an order can fill at a worse price than set, especially around events such as the FOMC decision. Gold and USD pairs can move together when rate pricing shifts.
Trading gold with leverage magnifies losses as well as potential returns relative to the margin committed; leverage is double-edged. Position sizing expressed as a percentage of account equity shows how far a single 1% to 3% swing in gold would move an account balance.
